For over thirty years, D. Clark MacPherson has appreciated the female form through his photography. Fascinated by the beauty that lies beneath artificiality portrayed in glamour nudes and highly stylized Victorian art poses, he has primarily utilized black and white film to photograph women in commonplace settings. His models are not professional models but are average women who are actively exploring their sensuality.

The portfolio of work appearing on this website was developed over a period of more than thirty years. This working title for this group of photographs, which was originally “Natural Nudes”, evolved through the many years of working exclusively in black and white photography with inexperienced models. Some of the poses seem modest while others are more seductive and yet others are clearly erotic. All of these poses and the emotional expression observed in the work came freely from the models. They were celebrating a personal freedom of expression without the fear of being judged or criticized for it.

Glamour or "centerfold" photography is often a disguised form of denigration. But the work shown here is an attempt to remove that prurient and sexualized interest while still retaining the voyeuristic allure of the female nude. Whatever was portrayed was the emotional offering of the person being photographed.

To expose one's nudity to a camera with someone else looking on can never be considered "natural" in the true sense of the word. But, here, as in other endeavors in life, there comes a point where one can become comfortable in focusing on personal expression to the exclusion of everything else. For the models whose images appear here, they had managed to ignore everything but the emotional reason for having chosen to pose. They wanted to experience an inner desire to express, to excite, to beckon and possibly even to irritate the viewer with their beauty and individuality.

Here is a body of work for your appreciation, which was equally enjoyed and appreciated by those that chose to model. The women traveled along a path of personal exploration and these are the fruits of that experience.
